Let's start a conversation...

On 21 September the No Hate Speech Movement is countering hate speech targeting Muslims in support of the International day of Peace. It calls for positive dialogue to decrease stereotyping and judgement, and strengthen counter and alternative narratives that debunk hate speech and its underlying xenophobic narrative effecting Muslims.

Muslims are the second group most targeted by hate speech online in Europe. Anti – Muslim arguments are no longer confined to the fringes of society and are now also embraced by some mainstream politicians resulting in growing xenophobic populist discourse. This tendency may contribute to a more general disintegration of human values, such as non-discrimination, tolerance, freedom of religion, solidarity and equality. With this Action Day the Movement is calling for solidarity with the people (our friends, neighbours, colleagues, co-citizens...) affected by such hate speech. By focussing on the person, instead of the phobia of the Islam and its subsequent negative connotations, the Movement wants to break the division between “us” and “them” that has developed in the public discourse of many countries.  The xenophobic populist discourse portrays a non-existing link between Refugees, Muslim faith and recent terrorist attacks in Europe. This simplistic xenophobic narrative does not reflect the reality where refugees of many different faiths seek safety from war and conflict, nearly all European Muslims live peaceful in their community for decades, sometimes centuries, and most recent terror attacks were perpetrated by nationals of the countries affected. The issue is complex that we must not and should not simplify into "good" and "bad" nor to "us" and "them". Let's start a constructive conversation together in Europe to reverse the spread of hate speech and disintegration of our societies....

The Movement is initiated and run by young people with the support of the Council of Europe, through national campaigns run in its 47 member states. The campaign is against all forms of expressions of hate speech online especially those that most affect young people. The campaign is based on promoting Human Rights, the participation of young people and education on media literacy. It aims at countering and combating hate speech by providing alternative narratives and speaking up against racism and discrimination. The campaign is fully in support of freedom of expression online for all and strongly against the intention of limiting the rights of oppressed groups of people (minorities).
