Turning the Internet Pink

Reproductive health care provider Planned Parenthood launched its #PinkOut Day Thunderclap campaign as a way to unite its supporters from all across the country. The organization aimed to turn the Internet pink with messages and images of support for reproductive health and rights.

On September 29, 2015, Planned Parenthood’s Thunderclap messages were unleashed from 12,869 supporters’ social media accounts. That same day, Planned Parenthood supporters held over 300 events in nearly 90 cities across the country.

Organizations such as MoveOn.org, CREDO Action, and People for the American Way helped organize the events and gathered more than 2.4 million “I Stand With Planned Parenthood” petition signatures to deliver to Congress.

Planned Parenthood’s Thunderclap campaign accumulated a social reach of 7.8 million, and #StandWithPP trended nationally and worldwide on Twitter and Instagram throughout the day on September 29.

Over 500,000 people turned their social media profile pictures and cover photos pink, including celebrities like Ariana Grande, DJ Samantha Ronson, Jason Ritter, author Jennifer Weiner, and Lena Dunham. Thousands posted photos of themselves wearing pink for #PinkOut Day.

The day was an opportunity for Planned Parenthood supporters to speak as one and share stories of their experiences with the organization. According to Planned Parenthood Director of Digital Advocacy Heather Holdridge,

“We along with our supporters and the 1 in 5 women who have accessed care at Planned Parenthood in their lifetime, would not be silenced. In response, a pink tsunami of supporters online and in person stood up for their reproductive rights — and stood with Planned Parenthood.”
