Stemming the impact of disasters is a crucial challenge, notably as climate change drives an increase in the frequency and intensity of hazards such as storms, floods and heat-waves. The huge death toll and massive economic losses  in disasters are major blows to families and communities around the globe, repeatedly setting back development gains.

Plenty can be done, however. From early warning systems to effective evacuation plans, and from safe schools, hospitals, homes and workplaces to hazard-aware businesses, the path to resilience is clear and is being walked by countries worldwide. A decade after the Indian Ocean Tsunami spurred the creation of the most encompassing international accord on disaster risk reduction in history, the Hyogo Framework for Action, the March 14-18 UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan, will set the course for our shared future.
