Pay Attention, UK.

Young adults with untreated ADHD have:
  • around 2.6 times the number of sexual partners...
  • 9 times the number of pregnancies...
  • 4 times the number of STDs...
  • and are 2.5x more likely to have been tested for AIDS
...than people of the same age and background without ADHD.

Adults with untreated ADHD are:
  • 7 times more likely than their peers to have had multiple vehicle crashes
  • twice as likely to be fired from a job
  • 9 times more likely to end up in prison
... than people without the disorder.

ADHD is the second greatest predictor of total offending behaviour behind heroin use.

ADHD is the most common mental health disorder in young people in the UK. It is proven, on average, to have a worse impact on the sufferer's quality of life than anxiety, depression, and many more mental and physical health problems.

This disorder faces a lot of stigma and prejudice, despite more extensive evidence for it than any other common mental health disorder. As a nation, we will not turn a blind eye to blatant prejudice and discrimination be it based on racial diversity, gender diversity, religious diversity or neuro (mental) diversity. Even from the government's point of view, untreated ADHD costs taxpayers a lot of money that could be saved for other purposes. So why are we ignoring it?

Achieving equality for people with ADHD in UK will take decades. The first step to achieving it, however, starts with beating the stigma around ADHD, and that’s something that we can begin to do now. #AttentionUK is campaigning for formal recognition from campaigning political parties about the scale of this problem, alongside their pledge that if elected, they will ensure that (by 2021) every person with ADHD in the UK will be able to access the treatment and support that the National Guidelines for this condition recommend, and which commissioners have a legal requirement to follow.

Attention UK

We are the few from the ADHD community with the resources and platforms to try and speak for us all, and we are trying to get our voices heard. We have ADHD and have experienced firsthand our needs being ignored and brushed under the carpet, our voices blocked out by bureaucratic barriers, media bias, social stigma and widespread prejudice, the remorseless underprovision of ADHD services, and entrenched discrimination against people with ADHD in our mental health system and other public services.
