Influenza (flu) is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others. Between 1976 and 2007, in the United States, flu-related deaths ranged from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people, and each year, more than 200,000 are hospitalized. “Flu season” in the United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May.
Influenza vaccination is the first (and best) way to prevent this dangerous disease that affects so many people and their families each year. The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) work together every September to officially kickoff the flu season and encourage vaccination across the US with a press event and media tour. The kickoff is devoted to promoting the importance of annual vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older and raising awareness about the potential dangers of influenza.
