Epilepsy is more than seizures

People often think of epilepsy as being 'just seizures'.  Epilepsy doesn’t define who you are, however you may not be able to do things other people take for granted.  The support of friends, family, organisations, colleagues and employers is invaluable. #Purpleday is an international day to raise epilepsy awareness.

Most people with epilepsy will find their seizures are controlled with medication and everyone is affected differently.  When someone is diagnosed with epilepsy it can affect many areas of their life.  These issues may not apply to everyone with epilepsy:

  • living with the uncertainty of never knowing if or when you will have another seizure
  • loss of self-confidence
  • feeling low, anxious or stressed
  • increased risk of injury
  • losing driving licence for 12 months or more
  • issues around employment or even losing your job
  • fear of crossing the road or being on their own in case you have a seizure
  • sense of isolation.

Be #epilepsyaware and know how to support someone you know with epilepsy.
