#Lonmin give #Marikana justice

The fatal police shooting of 37 workers at the Marikana platinum mine in August 2012 shocked the world. The workers were on strike for a living wage and dignified conditions for their families. British mining company Lonmin refused to hear their demands. What followed instead was the worst recorded instance of police violence in South Africa since apartheid.

Five years on, there have been no prosecutions, no improvements, no reparations for the families living in grief and dire poverty – and no apology. But it's time for Lonmin to take responsibility for the people that were killed for demanding to be heard.

After the massacre and amidst a brutal police crackdown, the women of Marikana rose up to lead their community towards justice. Sikhala Sonke, meaning 'we cry together', was founded to win justice for those who were killed and a decent future for the families they left behind.

This is their demand. Please add your voice, so it can be heard.

This marks the start of a renewed campaign to force Lonmin to take responsibility for what happened and for the welfare of its employees and their families. They are still struggling to survive in shacks, on poverty wages without electricity, clean water or safe working conditions.

This campaign is in memory of Paulinah Masuhlo, who died in September 2012 during peaceful protest by Sikhala Sonke after being shot by South African police.
