Detroit is rediscovering its entrepreneurial roots. It has nowhere to go but up, and entrepreneurs are seeing the business opportunities that can be made there. Leaders across nonprofits, corporation and governments are paying attention to those who have solutions to bring to the table.

We want to hear your solutions, as well. IdeaMarket is heading to Detroit! We understand the potential and want to be a part of the movement. But we need you - entrepreneurs, engineers, developers, and other solutions providers. We’re holding a challenge to move Detroit forward - a challenge focused specifically on transportation.

With massive changes in its population and jobs, Detroit's public transportation system has evolved little. As Detroit rebuilds its economy and creates jobs, workers need to be able to get to and from work more efficiently and safely.

Twenty six percent of Detroit's residents do not have access to a car. This is not normally a problem in high-density cities, but in a place like spread-out Detroit, having a car is important in daily life. Public transit is your next bet. However, the major transit system, DDOT has seen a decline in ridership, with 36 million rides given in 2012, and now 25 million rides given in 2014.

But public transportation in general is a market supported by growing demand and changes in preferences and demographics that secure its further development. These changes include increased support for and use by baby boomers and millennials - fast-growing groups that will shape the U.S. market for years to come. And the changes are happening quickly. Recent trends also indicate ridership on public transit is growing faster than funding levels and service provided.

Let's embrace the opportunity and build a better networked Detroit!

The #MoveDetroitForward Transportation challenge is a call for entrepreneurial teams to make transportation faster, reliable, safer and connected.

Starting on September 15, 2015 apply to the challenge by submitting a solution with your team. If we think your insight is a viable starting point towards unlocking opportunity in Detroit, you will get a chance to win funding and turn your insights into a real-life Detroit based company.
