The #Inglorious12th

The so called Glorious 12th (August) sees the start of grouse shooting season in the uplands.

You may hear lots of stories about how the uplands are managed and all the benefits that come with that for some breeding birds like Curlew for example; but there is of course a darker side to all this in the form of raptor persecution.  Grouse moors are intensively managed to produce unnaturally large numbers of Red Grouse, many of which will then be shot.  But anything that would naturally prey on the Red Grouse is not welcome on the shooting estates and it is worrying to see a lack of natural predators in these areas.

Something I am learning is that where there is big money to be made there can also be criminal activity. Wildlife crime is not something you hear about enough in the news, as the environment and natural world are so far down the list of priorities in government, business, education etc.

The evidence just keeps getting clearer and clearer that serious wildlife crime is taking place in the uplands.  Modern day technology is helping to bring these activities to light more and more.

Just one more statistic for you. In theory, the uplands in England could support over 300 pairs of hen harriers. Last year we had just 4 breeding pairs.  Only about 1% of what could be there. Not really a statistic to be pushed down the priority list. And this year's number of breeding hen harriers in England is not looking promising either. But even if the numbers doubled to 8 pairs, it still wouldn't be acceptable.

So as the social media posts about the so called Glorious 12th start flooding in, wouldn't it be great to see #Inglorious12th trending and raising much needed awareness about the criminal activity that continues to plague these important breeding grounds.

  • Social Reach Flies Past 8,000,000

    August 8, 2017
    Hi everyone

I am sure many of you will have seen this, but we past another thunderclap milestone and now have a social reach of over 8 million, but we still have a few days left. There was a big surge in sign ups after all the Hen Harrier Days last weekend where Chris Packham, Mark Avery and others did a great job of encouraging people to sign up.

Let's see just how far we can reach by Saturday 12th August.

    Cheers, Finn
  • Only 3 successful breeding hen harrier pairs in England this year

    August 1, 2017
Have you seen the news from the RSPB Skydancer team today? Only 3 successful breeding pairs of hen harrier in England this year. Disgusting isn't it.

Please get everyone you know to sign up to the thunderclap and help #Inglorious12th to trend on 12th August.

    Cheers, Finn
  • 7 million within reach

    July 24, 2017
    Hello again

The thunderclap just keeps building. It started as they all do as just a whisper in a few ears, and then in built into a more open conversation, and then it became quite shouty and now it is roaring!

So far we have the chance to reach over 6.6 million people with our message about raptor persecution in the uplands, but if the hashtag trends we will reach so many more.

Thank you for all you have done so far, but it you could get one more person each to sign, we can get even louder. If you can share the link on FB and twitter we could reach even more people and get them to sign up.

This isn't my thunderclap, this is a way for everyone who cares about what is happening in the uplands to shout about it together on 12th August. Let's see how loud we can get.

    Cheers, Finn

  • Reaching out to 3 million people

    July 11, 2017
Wow! Got back from school today to a social reach of over 3 million and with over 30 days to go, I can't begin to imagine where this will end up. I mainly focus on hen harriers when I talk about raptor persecution in the uplands (as they are so close to extinction as a breeding bird in England), but of course it's buzzards, peregrines, owls and others that are illegally targeted, not to mention the many mammal species that get culled. Thank you so much for speaking out about this, every single sign up helps us to shout louder. We still have over 30 days to build up the numbers and the reach of this thunderclap.

    Cheers, Finn
  • Target Reached In A Day

    June 18, 2017
A massive thank you to everyone who signed and helped hit the target in a day. Now it's a case of trying to reach as many people as possible, so please encourage others to sign up and help make sure awareness is raised on 12th August, the Inglorious 12th.
