by World Hepatitis Alliance category: Cause
Viral hepatitis is one of the leading causes of death globally, accounting for 1.34 million deaths per year – that’s as many as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or malaria.
Today, more than 289 million are living with viral hepatitis and are unaware, facing the possibility of developing fatal liver disease or unknowingly transmitting the infection to others. For those who are aware, highly effective treatments – in the case of hepatitis C, curative treatments – are available but denied to 99% of people living with the cancer-causing disease.
With the inclusion of viral hepatitis in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the recent adoption of the world’s first global hepatitis strategy, which set a goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030, we are at a pivotal moment.
On World Hepatitis Day, we are calling on all people to #ShowYourFace in an effort to raise awareness of this deadly disease and to show that urgent action is needed to eliminate this global killer within our lifetime.
Sign up to the #ShowYourFace Thunderclap today. Together we can eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030.
