The #no2LGBTHate campaign, launched at 3pm on 10th January, hit its 500 supporter target in just 24 hours, a full three weeks before the tweet goes live. To everyone who has signed up, a massive thank you. We’re already trending number one on the Thunderclap site and, although we’ve just raised our supporter target to 1,000, we’re hoping to exceed this figure several times over.
The supporters who have signed up to date have a social reach of over 3.95 million which means that, even if nobody else signed up, just shy of 4 million people will be reached with our message at 4pm GMT on 1st February.
And let’s not lose sight of why we’re doing this. We’re urging Twitter to monitor and, if necessary, take action against those accounts guilty of tweeting disgusting homophobic, biphobic and transphobic abuse, most of which is far too revolting to quote. Four times as many young LGBTs commit suicide than their straight counterparts, and online abuse undoubtedly contributes to this shameful statistic.
Whether you’ve got ten or 10,000 social media followers, you’re all equally important to us, but we’d like to make a special mention of Stonewall, STOP Homophobia, Charlie King, Denise Welch, Gay Times, Stonewall, Charlie Condou and Gay Star News who, between them, account for over 2,000,000 followers.
Once again, huge thanks from all of us to all of you. Let’s keep the momentum going right up until 1st February. Tell your friends, family and work colleagues to visit
www.no2LGBTHate.com today and, together, let’s make a difference.
