Layers of History

Our exciting new project

We want to give everyone the opportunity to discover, understand and investigate Lincolnshire’s historic landscapes. Our brand new, Heritage Lottery funded, Layers of History project will enable everyone to explore the historic landscapes that hold so many clues to the unique history of Lincolnshire.

Centuries of human activity have left successive ‘layers’ of evidence in the landscape and we will show you how to recognise the characteristics of each historic layer and learn to ‘read’ the historic development of the landscape.

Whether you want to get stuck in with earthwork surveys, carry out research in Lincolnshire archives, undertake a graveyard or hedgerow survey or learn how to paint a historic landscape, there will be something for everyone.

What we will do

Layers of History will provide an innovative approach to involving people in investigating, recording and interpreting Lincolnshire’s landscapes. It will help to make people more aware of the quality and value of elements of the county’s heritage and historic landscapes that are generally under recognised, understood, and appreciated. By raising awareness of them the project will help to protect them for the future.

The overall aims of the project are:

• To produce a series of high-quality online learning courses

• To recruit and train volunteers from a broad audience to carry our detailed landscape studies of at least 8 historic sites in Lincolnshire

• To deliver a range of activities for the general public, plus activities specifically designed for carers and the people they care for and young people

• To create a series of high-quality digital reconstructions of 4 of the study sites

• To ensure that the study findings are widely disseminated and made publicly available, including through the County Historic Environment Record

How you can help

We want as many people as possible to get involved in the project, so we'd love it if you would spread the word by signing up to our Thunderclap and sharing the fact that you're supporting Layers of History!

Win!

As a thank you for registering your support, we'll enter you into a prize draw to win a signed copy of Mary-Ann Ochota's 'Hidden Histories: A spotter's Guide to the British Landscape'.
