24hourlondon

24hourlondon is for when you're out, it's late and you don't want to go home. It locates you and tells you what's open late nearby: bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs. We need to achieve 15k+ downloads in order to attract investment to grow and improve this business, which has the potential to provide a strong boost to London's night-time economy.

London's nightlife is contracting at an unprecedented rate due to the pressure of land prices – which mean the owners can usually make a lot more by selling to developers than running a licensed venue – the fact that dating apps mean we no longer need nightclubs to check out the local talent and the Late Night Levy, which piles a new tax on late-opening venues simply for having a late licence.

But we think that whatever life throws at us, there's no point living in a metropolis unless you go out and soak it up: meeting people in the flesh, feeling the tingles and living the life.

And in case you need any more of a sweetener, 24hourlondon recently began adding drinks offers from our bars: the first one's free. We hope soon to be the go-to app for London at night.

Show me a Londoner and I will show you someone who has stood in the rain with their mates saying 'I know there used to be a late-opening bar around here somewhere'. Please join us for our Thunderclap on 11 January if you love the possibilities that living in a truly world-class city offers!

  • Got there! AND YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHO SUPPORTER #100 WAS!!!

    January 6, 2018
Sorry for the uncharacteristic exclamation marks and capital letters. But yay! London's Night Czar, Amy Lamé, became the 100th supporter of our Thunderclap, taking us to our target.

This feels like a good omen.

And all done with five days to spare, which is a little trick I picked up at journalism school. Always arrive early, we were told. Anything else gives the other guy a psychological advantage...

Not quite sure who the other guy is in this context. But arriving early certainly feels good. It would also be a bonus to put on some more supporters before the 11th, now the thunderclap is definitely happening...

Thanks everyone for your kind enthusiasm so far. Onwards and upwards!

  • No umbrella? No idea what's open nearby? No problem

    January 5, 2018
Show me a Londoner and I will show you someone who has stood around in the rain with their mates saying 'I know there used to be a late-opening bar around here somewhere'.

24hourlondon is for when you're out, it's late and you don't want to go home. It locates you and tells you what's open late nearby: bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs.

So it's super-useful for Londoners, essential for tourists – many of whom are shocked, shocked I say that so much in this supposedly throbbing metropolis closes at 11pm – and will soon also become indispensable for the venues themselves. For we have a plan...

This promotion is an attempt to raise awareness that we exist in an attempt to locate our tribe. We know you're out there because we meet you individually all the time. But word of mouth is where it's at and we need all our people to know we're here.

The monetisation plan is disruptive and investors will love it. But we need more downloads in order to make it sensible.

So if you know someone would love 24hourlondon, why not do them - and us - a favour and tell them about our thunderclap. Happy new year! And many thanks to Palash Dave, the prodigal sign-up. You made it! :-)

  • What's that in the distance?

    January 3, 2018
    Thunder is a-coming...

Thanks to Michelle Ross-Stanton – who is currently over-wintering in Texas where she says they're having phenomenally cold weather – the reach of this thunderclap just shot through the six-figure barrier and it now looks possible that over 100,000 people could hear about our little startup at midday on 11 January. I have to admit that this mainly makes me think that I should try to add a handful more drinks offers to 24hourlondon before then and encourage Dean – my cofounder – to get the website in slightly better nick *makes like a headless chicken*

In terms of numbers of participants, the total now stands at 81 out of a target of 100 with eight days to go. It's looking promising... And I'm learning a totally new skill, which is figuring out who is worth badgering to sign up if they've already said yes a couple of times but haven't actually done it...

In the process of talking to people about this today I have discovered that my friend Greg Hayman is now running the RAF's Radar Museum in north Norfolk, which is going to be an interesting challenge for a man with his PR and marketing background. And that my brother-in-law signed up ages ago but I was too full of mince pies to notice... Thanks so much for your help, both of you.

  • Do you know someone who would love to use 24hourlondon?

    December 28, 2017
Thanks for signing up to the 24hourlondon thunderclap, my lovelies. We're 50% of the way to our target with two weeks to go. So here's a picture of a very tenacious goat scaling a dam, to say thank you! (I've had a grudging admiration for goats ever since I saw one surreptitiously eating Joanna Moschandreas's packed lunch while it was still in her bag on a school journey to London Zoo.)

So the question arises now... Do you know anyone who would thank you for letting them know that 24hourlondon exists? We meet these people all the time when we're out and about leafleting (which we do – obviously – with our 24hourlondon beermats, currently near to the venues that have added a free drink to the app). Roughly once in every 20 times we speak to someone about the business they say "Wow! That's a great idea!" And reach immediately for their phones.

Many of you – though not all – have signed up so far because you know me. And I'm really, really grateful. But if this startup is going to get lift-off we have to find our tribe. So if you think you know someone who might actually thank you for letting them know about 24hourlondon – for when you're out, it's late and you don't want to go home – why not send them a link to our thunderclap page and invite them to get involved? It could make all the difference.
