How to Fix “Couldn’t Load Image. Tap to Retry.” On Instagram

Sometimes technology doesn’t work exactly the way we want it to, social media included. When browsing or using Instagram, it can be really frustrating when you get error messages that hinder your experience.

One of those annoying alerts is the “couldn’t load image, tap to retry” message. Have you been troubled by this error message lately?

It’s actually a fairly common issue on Instagram, as the app may encounter hiccups. What makes it even worse is that Instagram’s support team can’t be reached directly, so getting help can be tough.

What’s more, the error message doesn’t tell you why the app “couldn’t load image,” so you have no idea what the cause of the error is and what could be going on.

In most cases, the likely culprit is a connectivity issue. That said, there may be some other things that cause this bug to occur.

If you’ve already ruled out internet connection issues as the cause, you may be dumbfounded as to what causes the “couldn’t load image. Tap to retry” error on Instagram.

Don’t worry about getting help from Instagram directly— we’re here to lead the way. We’re going to discuss some possible causes of this error, how you can fix it, as well as a workaround if you still need additional troubleshooting.

Why Did I Get the “Couldn’t Load Image. Tap to Retry.” Error?

There are a few reasons why people get the “couldn’t load image. Tap to retry” error on Instagram. Two of the most common reasons are:

  1. Instagram is down on their end
  2. Your network isn’t working correctly

Instagram goes down every now and then. The most recent Instagram outage affected an array of platforms, all owned by Facebook, and shook the world when no one could access them for hours on end.

While outages of this scale rarely occur, it could be the reason why an image didn’t load for a brief amount of time. Before looking to fix any issues on your end, check to see if Instagram is down.

You can use Downdetector to get the latest updates on the functionality of Instagram. It’s a simple and handy little tool that will help you eliminate one possible issue right off the bat.

The Twitter community also typically posts updates about this, so if you search Twitter for “Instagram down,” you’ll be able to tell if something is awry.

Instagram may also release a tweet from their official Twitter account if there’s a substantial problem or global issue.

How to Fix “Couldn’t Load Image. Tap to Retry.” On Instagram

If you’ve eliminated an Instagram outage as the culprit, you’ll need to find a way to fix the “couldn’t load image. Tap to retry” error.

There are a few solutions that we have here for you:

  1. Switch your network or disable wifi
  2. Clear your cache or stored data
  3. Use a VPN
  4. Change your APN Settings (Koodo)
  5. Wait for Instagram to come back up

We’re going to give you some insight on these particular issues and how to resolve them to fix Instagram not loading correctly.

1. Switch Your Network.

wifi

The first thing you should try if you’re getting the “couldn’t load image. Tap to retry” message is to switch your network or disable wifi.

If you’re browsing Instagram using local data (like LTE or 5G), try connecting to a nearby wifi signal, as your reception may not be very strong or you may be out of high-speed data (depending on your phone plans).

Alternatively, if you’re connected to a wifi network, disable your wifi and switch to browsing from your data.

It may be a simple case of connectivity issues either from your wifi or data browsing. Or, it could be something of network issues, where there have been certain controls installed.

For instance, if you’re on a wifi network and the administrator has set parental controls, images may not load on Instagram. Or, if a phone user has set up particular controls, the same issue could ensue.

If you’re on YouTube, you may not be able to watch particular videos or view comments under videos.

If you want to permanently resolve this issue, contact the wifi administrator or adjust settings on the device to remove controls.

2. Clear Cache/Data.

Clear Cache and Cookies

If your connection is working properly, you may need to clear your cache or stored data to fix the “couldn’t load image. Tap to retry” error on Instagram.

For iOS devices:

  1. Tap and hold the Instagram app
  2. Delete the app
  3. Reinstall Instagram from the App Store

For Android devices:

  1. Visit your device settings
  2. Choose Apps & Notifications > Instagram > Storage
  3. On this menu, you’ll hit Clear Cache.

Following these steps on your respective device will likely resolve the error message because any of the stored data that was associated with Instagram will be removed, allowing you to start fresh.

The only way to clear cache on an iPhone is by deleting and reinstalling an app. Unfortunately, iOS devices don’t offer a delete cache/data option, so you’ll need to reinstall and log in again once you download the app afresh.

You can clear the cache on Android easily from the Apps & Notifications menu. Remember, choose Instagram > Storage > Clear Cache.

When you clear the cache on your device or web browser, you effectively remove all pre-loaded images on Instagram so that the next time you open the app, everything will need to load again.

This may get rid of the “Couldn’t load image. Tap to retry” error, especially if you happened to experience a glitch related to pre-loaded data.

3. Use a VPN.

VPN

In order to avoid any issues with current data or connectivity restrictions, you can use a VPN (Virtual Private Network).

When you use a VPN, your network issues experienced while using wifi or data can be temporarily resolved. It will intercept these network issues and allow you to load Instagram without trouble.

For instance, if your data network has any issues, connecting to a VPN can resolve it. Or, if the location you’re trying to browse from has restrictions, a VPN will bypass this.

You can access a VPN on the App Store as well as the Google Play store. Search for VPN or Free VPN, download the app, complete any necessary registration steps, and then connect.

Once you’ve connected to the VPN, force close your Instagram app and then reopen it after about 30 seconds.

At this time, the images should load properly without displaying the “couldn’t load image. Tap to retry” error message.

4. Change Your APN Settings (for Koodo)

Koodo APN

If you find yourself using Koodo, you may want to change your APN settings to the ones recommended by Koodo (users of non-Koodo devices can skip this potential solution).

You’ll need to reconfigure your APN settings so that they match the recommended ones set by Koodo.

If your phone’s APN settings are different from Koodo’s recommended ones, you can reset them so that your APN (Access Point Name) isn’t an issue when trying to connect to Instagram.

Many users of Koodo have reported that after changing their APN settings to match that of Koodo’s, Instagram loads normally once again.

Navigate to your device’s APN settings and match it to Koodo.

5. Wait for Instagram Errors to be Fixed

 Instagram Errors

If you’ve used Downdetector or other methods to identify that Instagram is down, you’ll simply have to wait for the outage to be resolved.

There’s nothing that you can do in the meantime to view Instagram images. If the issue is on the part of Instagram, just wait it out and all will be in good working order when Instagram gets things sorted out.

Instagram is known to be down at least once every year, as was experienced in October of 2021, so just keep that in mind when wondering why something isn’t working properly.

Again, visit Downdetector to check and see if there’s anything wrong with Instagram, or check Twitter for updates. If Instagram is down, it’ll typically be resolved in just a few minutes, or up to a few hours.

Be patient, do something else in the meantime, and check back shortly to see if Instagram is ready to go.

“Couldn’t Load Image. Tap to Retry.” Workaround

Can’t load images on Instagram mobile? Using Instagram Web is a workaround for the “Couldn’t load image. Tap to retry” error on your Instagram app.

When you can’t view an image on the Instagram app, you can switch to a web browser and try to view the image that way instead. You can view Instagram Web on a desktop, laptop, or even on your mobile phone’s browser.

To view the image easily, copy the content’s URL and copy it into the address bar on a web browser. In order to copy a link on Instagram, tap the three dots at the top-right of the content, and click Link. The link will be copied to your clipboard.

Once you’ve copied the link, visit your web browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.) and paste the URL into the address bar.

The content should then appear in web format, bypassing the “couldn’t load image. Tap to retry” error that you received in the mobile app.

While this is a quick fix, if you’re still having trouble with your Instagram app, you should definitely try clearing your cache or uninstalling/reinstalling the app altogether.

Final Thoughts: Images Not Loading on Instagram

It’s definitely frustrating when images don’t load on Instagram. If Instagram itself is down, your only option is to simply wait it out.

Commonly, network connectivity issues cause problems and may cause you to receive the “couldn’t load image. Tap to retry” error when viewing content on Instagram.

Whatever the trouble, we hope that using the solutions above, we were able to help you resolve the issue. If you continue to have problems loading content on Instagram, try to reach out to Instagram support, or log in from a different device to see if the issue persists.
