"Another one bites the dust" was a common refrain for Medwin and I as we did our Christmas shopping this year. It was especially tough parting with our beloved Lindt chocolates, but they, along with so many other yummy foods & toiletries, needlessly contain palm oil.
Why? Because it's cheap.
Unfortunately, monetary savings for big companies come at a steep environmental cost. Grown in areas of poverty and corruption, palm oil is rapidly replacing virgin forests and driving species like Orangutans, tigers, elephants and rhinos to extinction; and it's responsible for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions!
But the silver lining is that for every product that we banned, we were able to find a sustainable alternative to replace it. Proof that this movement is growing, and that we can make a difference.
A few months ago when we heard Dr. Ian Singleton & the Sumatran Orangutan Society speak at Eden Project, a young girl in the audience asked, "Does it actually make a difference if we boycott palm oil?"
His response stunned us: it's the only thing that makes a difference. Whether we like it or not, money is power, and how we choose to spend our money is ultimately what shapes our world.
As 2017 draws to a close, we're truly excited about continuing our quest to be single-use plastic-free & palm oil-free in 2018! Will you join our challenge? It's easy!
Every month simply replace one product (food, cosmetics, etc.) with a palm oil-free and/or single-use plastic-free alternative, and write about it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #BloomtownEcoChallenge so we can follow everyone's journeys!
And at the end of every month, we'll pick one poster to feature and award a £25 Bloomtown Gift Card!
Please use our free pocket guide to make sure your products are truly palm oil-free.
