#CoinsforChange

LitHub is an initiative driven by the efforts of like-minded high school students. Our goal is to provide financial education to people of all ages to help them make better decisions in the future. Did you know:

  • Only 46% of Americans have less than $10,000 saved for retirement?
  • Student debt exceeds $1.1 Trillion?
  • Only 17 States require high school students to take a course in Personal Finance, a number which hasn't changed from 2014?
  • According to Forbes Magazine, only 57% of Adults in the US are financially literate?
Here are just several reasons why we need to teach the youth about personal finance: 

  • As the variety and complexity of financial products continue to grow, so do the number of financial decisions people have to make. Most of the youth often do not understand debit and credit cards, mortgages, banking, investment and insurance products and services, credit reports, credit scores, etc.

  • Most college students borrow to finance their education, yet often do so without fully understanding how much debt is appropriate for their education or the connection between their area of study and the income level that they can expect upon graduation. Many students attend college without fully understanding financial aid, loans, debt, credit, inflation and budgeting.

  • Employee pension plans are disappearing and being replaced by defined contribution retirement programs, which impose greater responsibilities on young adults to save and invest, and ultimately spend retirement savings wisely. If they fail to do this, they could become a significant economic burden on our society.
