In 2016, I launched Tackle Meningitis, a campaign led by GSK and supported by the two UK advocacy groups, Meningitis Now and the Meningitis Research Foundation. Together we aim to raise awareness of the disease, its symptoms and the fact that it can affect both children and young people. Building on this work, GSK hope to mobilise mums across the world to help spread this message with a global Mums vs Meningitis campaign, using #VsMeningitis to help get the message out.
You’re probably aware that my two-year old son Sami contracted meningitis in 2016, but he was lucky enough to make a full recovery – now I want to spread the word about this devastating disease.
I’m calling on all UK mums (and dads, grandparents and primary care givers) to be aware of the symptoms of meningitis so they can spot it early and act fast to seek medical help. It’s not just the rash we’re talking about, which can often appear later or not at all, but the early symptoms, like cold hands and feet, muscle pain, headache, fever and vomiting. Trust your instincts, and if you feel something isn’t right, get your child to a doctor immediately.
I would also urge you to speak to your GP or pharmacist about measures you can take to reduce the risk of infection.
