Break barriers for autism!

As part of a long-running awareness campaign to be launched on World Autism Awareness Day, in 2017 Autism-Europe will be focusing on the theme "Break barriers together for autism. Let's build an accessible society".

In the campaign we ask you to symbolically break barriers by writing a short description of what make society inaccessible for you on a banner or a piece of paper. Then you can photograph or film yourselves holding your banner, before showing yourselves breaking through it or ripping it up.

Autistic people and their families face many barriers to enjoying their full rights. The aim of this campaign is not only to understand what barriers to inclusion the autistic people are up against, but also to identify how we all, as a society, can work together to overcome and remove them.

The idea is to convey a positive and optimist message about autism. Also the campaign will foster the social model of disability and have a strong rights-based approach, recalling the rights enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disability.
