Pledge to get Outdoors!

Children have lost 25% of playtime and 50% of unstructured outdoor activity over recent decades, as rates of obesity and related diseases climbed. Children who spend more time outdoors experience benefits to their mental and physical well-being that indoor activities can’t match. And it’s parents and family who are most influential in getting them there.

Outdoor play contributes to lower stress levels and more active imaginations, helps children become fitter and leaner, develop stronger immune systems and have greater respect for themselves and for others. Furthermore, those who spend childhood in nature are more likely to become our environmental stewards of the future, ensuring such benefits for generations to come.

To help encourage more families to seek out an active outdoor lifestyle, and to embrace and preserve our great outdoors, participants from federal agencies, nonprofit organizations and the recreation industry are teaming up to host the 7th annual National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day) on Saturday, June 14th.

Show your support and encourage more families to get outdoors and reconnect with nature! Here’s how:

  1. At the top of this page, click "Support with Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr" to get the word out to your followers and friends. Be sure to ask them to sign up for Thunderclap too.

  2. Tell friends and followers what you like best about getting outdoors and use the tag #GOday.

  3. Find National GO Day events in your area at: http://www.nationalgetoutdoorsday.org/locations/

  4. Get outdoors and explore!

About National Get Outdoors Day Events:

Discover the Forest
@Cheecker

Discover the Forest is a public service campaign created by the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council with the primary goal of inspiring kids and their parents to reconnect with nature. The campaign brings to life the joy and excitement kids have when they discover the wonders of nature, helping create interest in their environment and a lifelong relationship with it. The campaign website, DiscoverTheForest.org, includes an interactive tool that enables users to search for nearby forests and parks, as well as downloadable activities for them to print and take with them when they visit. The campaign also features online communities on Facebook (search Discover the Forest) and Twitter (@cheecker).
