Our oceans need your help against the destructive forces of overfishing, oil drilling, seabed mining, pollution and climate change. Next week we might have a game changing opportunity to protect the oceans and all marine creatures.
On June 16 and 17, John Kerry, the United States Secretary of State, is hosting the Our Ocean conference to bring together ocean experts, advocates, lawmakers and foreign policy officials from around the world in Washington, DC.
This conference might be one of the best platforms ever to convince John Kerry about the urgent need to work with world leaders to protect the largest portion of the world’s oceans, the High Seas. There is a UN meeting on protecting the high seas the same week!
But there is a problem. While the majority of countries support a UN agreement to protect international waters, the United States does not.
However, if thousands of us speak out while they are listening at the Our Oceans conference, we can ensure John Kerry, and leaders everywhere, hear the case for High Seas ocean sanctuaries.
With more than half of our oceans lying beyond the authority of any one country, it will take nothing less than a network of ocean sanctuaries – large areas where you don’t take anything, break anything or pollute anything – to secure the future we want for ‘Our Oceans’ and ocean life.
Without such protection, our oceans remain defenseless.
John Kerry is hosting the Our Oceans conference. He has already professed his love for the oceans. The conference, and John Kerry himself, are also going to great lengths to allow people to participate through social media.
We know that if enough people speak out, he’ll listen.
Join hundreds of others in this thunderclap to automatically post your message at the exact moment the conference starts and make sure John Kerry, and all world leaders, hear what the ocean desperately needs: a United Nations agreement to protect marine life on the high seas!
