Your #Someday is here.

There’s a new day of the week: “Someday” is now on the calendar. Whether someday your wish is to go skydiving, climb Mt. Everest or spend more time with your family, retirement planning should top that list.

Recent studies show that nearly half of Americans are not saving for the day they will no longer be working. What’s more, over the next 20 years, nearly 80 million baby boomers will retire, and most will depend on Social Security benefits for a substantial portion of their retirement income. Those who are not planning now for their future may be forced to make tough financial choices in what should be their golden years.

Many think of retirement as something far off in the distant future, saying, “Someday I’ll get around to making plans for retirement.” However, for many, “Someday” arrives sooner than they expected, due to poor health, unemployment or other unanticipated events.

With a "my Social Security" account, before you begin to receive benefits you can:

  • Get your online Social Security Statement;
  • Review your lifetime earnings; and
  • See estimates of your future benefits.

Once you begin receiving benefits, a "my Social Security" account allows you to manage your account (e.g., change your address, change direct deposit) and obtain instant access to your benefit information. At times, you may need to provide proof of your benefits when you:

  • Apply for loans;
  • Want to move into a new house or apartment; or
  • Need to apply for energy assistance or other state programs.

On this first National "my Social Security" Week, we ask for your help spreading the message to encourage your friends, family and neighbors to create their own account as well.

Create a "my Social Security" account today! It is easy, free and secure.
