MEDICINE FOR ALL

Medicine for all. That is our simple message. That is the reason we organized a global conference about open source pharma, with the support of the Rockefeller Foundation and the Open Society Foundations. And it is the shared vision that drew 23 people to a villa on Lake Como, from as far away as Delhi, Washington, D.C., and Sydney, to discuss how to turn this idea into an action plan. The goal is a new, alternative pharmaceutical ecosystem that prioritizes openness, transparency, and affordability. The inspiration? Linux for drugs. By leveraging new collaboration tools, the wisdom of global crowds, and creating new and innovative forms of IP and finance, we think pharma R&D can become more nimble and patient focused.

This campaign is the first step in laying out the reasons why an open source pharmaceutical ecosystem is not just necessary, but long overdue. We asked a cross-section of people to give us their perspectives on the nascent #OpenSourcePharma movement, and we will publish their responses on September 12th, with a promotional assist from our Thunderclap supporters. Some of the blog posts are personal, while others focus on financial and practical reasons. All of the writers agree that developing low-cost drugs is a human rights issue. Why create an effective drug for a particular disease, if the majority of its sufferers cannot afford the treatment? Where is the medical triumph or the justice if the medicine is out of reach? Furthermore, many so-called ‘neglected diseases’ have had no new drugs developed for them in decades.

After you read a few of the blog entries, we hope you will understand the urgency of the open source pharma movement.

@OSPInfo

In July 2014, we organized the first formal conference about developing a global open source pharma ecosystem. The event took place at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in Italy. Our goal was to launch concrete new initiatives to discover, develop, and commercialize medicines for the most pressing needs in our society through the use of open and inclusive research models.
