America Needs STEM Teachers

At the 2011 Flag Pin & Clapping Convention—aka The State of The Union address—President Obama challenged the nation to produce 100,000 excellent new science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers by the year 2021. Unlike the majority of things called for by elected officials, this particular commitment actually resulted in something happening.

The reason for the plea: the United States hasn’t exactly been the sharpest bulb in the knife shed when it comes to international rankings in math and science. That means we either start putting more great teachers into our nation’s classrooms, or we invent some entirely new rankings system—which would, you know, require math.

Since President Obama issued his 2011 challenge, the organization 100Kin10 has rallied scores of foundations, universities, nonprofits, and other partners around a single shared mission. In an era of fierce corporate competition and stark party-line politics, this movement stands as a pretty remarkable example of collaboration in the name of the greater good.

Since our primary target for this campaign is college STEM majors and recent grads, we decided to make the message, let’s just say “not bland.” We've got an animated music video, GIFs galore, and a batshit crazy career quiz all designed to say, "Hey! This STEM stuff is all mind-blowingly rad, and the people who teach it are pretty incredible people. Let’s make more of them!"

So lend your voice to a noble effort. Ensure the future of holographic selfies and breathable air and public infrastructure and really short online videos. The future state of STEM depends on the present state of STEM teaching.

    You know it.
    I know it.
And now many more of the American people know it: teaching STEM is a great way to blow minds and make the future better.

Thanks for the support, and know that when the cyborg duck invasion happens, you will be protected first!

Here are some helpful links to continue exploring what we've built together
    • The YouTube link to the much-promised animated music video
    • A Facebook Group for those already involved in STEM education or those curious to get more involved.
    • The official Twitter account which will be sharing mind-blowing information related to STEM
    • And a Tumblr, with GIFs galore. In fact, we've got a special page just for all the GIFs.

  • Thanks for helping us hit our goal, now let's keep going, for the children!

To our 580+ supporters, thank you!

We've hit our goal, now let's crush it.

It's great to see so many people support a campaign to make STEM teacher recruitment as mind-blowing as the teachers whose ranks we hope to expand. Among the launch supporters we have federal agencies, schools, entrepreneurs, businesses, teachers, and John Legend (who is clearly all of the things).

    We’re not done yet, though.

As we count down to launch with our big NASA-style countdown clock, we encourage you to encourage your friends and colleagues to join this launch phase. It doesn’t matter how big your network is. It’s how you use it.

Do you know people who work in the sciences, technology, or engineering fields? Do you know people who use math? How about teachers or students or student-teachers? Do you know people who sometimes think about tomorrow? Then they are invested in the future.

Please share this campaign with them.

Thanks for already blowing our minds,

    - Team Blow Minds.

Our goal is to make recruiting America’s science, tech, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers as mind-blowing as the act of teaching itself. The future of all the things you love (like iPhones and baby pandas and online food delivery), and all the things our nation needs (like bridges and not-cancer and cleaner energy) depends on having excellent STEM teachers ASAP.
