The ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in the deaths of over 5.4 million people - more than any conflict since World War II. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced, citizens continue to be terrorized, and rape is used as a weapon of war. The conflict has been largely fueled by the trade in four minerals - tin, tungsten, tantalum (the “3Ts”) and gold - all of which are essential components to many of the products we use every day. Stopping the illicit exploitation of these minerals will cut off a vital source of funding for armed groups that commit atrocities, and will contribute to a lasting peace in Congo.

Over the years, we've seen that companies that take the lead on addressing conflict minerals can make a difference. But companies rarely take action unless their consumers demand it. As a result of efforts from businesses, activists, governments, and others, the trade in three out of the four conflict minerals is becoming less militarized, but conflict gold continues to fund armed groups as well as the Congolese army.

It’s time to address this critical challenge. So we are turning to the world’s largest end-users of gold - jewelry companies - and asking them to take action.

On Monday, November 24th the Enough Project will launch a public campaign, highlighting the leading jewelry companies working towards sourcing conflict-free gold from Congo for their products. This campaign will center around the release of a jewelry leaderboard which will prominently feature these top companies and encourage increased engagement from the industry as a whole on the issue of conflict-free gold from Congo.

Participate in our Thunderclap by donating a Tweet or Facebook post to spread the word. And encourage companies to source conflict-free gold from Congo by using this leaderboard as a guide to making responsible holiday shopping choices.
