On Wednesday, May 22, Governor
Martin O'Malley will host a meeting
in Maryland with Democratic governors from around the country. Many of
those leaders, including Governor O'Malley himself, are making critical
decisions regarding the future of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in
Communities in many states including Pennsylvania, Colorado and Wyoming have already experienced devastating public health and environmental problems associated with this highly invasive, polluting and controversial form of energy extraction. That's because fracking is inherently unsafe and must be banned.
Governor O'Malley is not alone. Other Democratic governors, including Governor Andrew Cuomo (NY), Governor John Hickenlooper (CO), Governor Patt Quinn (IL) and Governor Jerry Brown (CA) are making critical decisions about fracking in their states too, and some of them may have higher political ambitions. Help us send a message to Governor O'Malley and his peers from the Democratic Governor's Association that merely regulating fracking will not protect us against its harmful effects, and that the path to the White House is not lined with oil and gas rigs. We need to ban fracking now!
Opponents of fracking will convene a march outside the Democratic Governor's Association conference on May 22 to send this message. Follow the march and join in the tweeting at #MarchVsFracking
