On Tuesday 11 June we need government and MPs to support an amendment to the Children and Families Bill which would to give young carers a new legal entitlement to assessment and support.
When young people take on inappropriate levels of caring the negative impacts on young carers can be wide ranging, severe and enduring.
Inappropriate caring is not being prevented because the needs of the person that the child is caring for are not fully met and the needs of the whole family are not taken into account.
This can have negative and costly impact on young carers’ lives, affecting their health, education and opportunities in the future.
The government has said that they are open to looking at improving the situation for young carers, but despite changing the law for adult carers we still haven’t seen any change in legislation for young carers. We need to let the government know that we are still waiting for equal rights for young carers.
The Children’s Society’s Chief Executive, Matthew Reed, said: ‘Without identification or assessment young carers and their families often don’t get the support they need and incredibly vulnerable children are slipping through the net.’
The Carer’s Trust’s Chief Executive, Thea Stein, said: ‘Young carers deserve support so that they can have the same opportunities as other children to learn and develop. We have a historic opportunity to change the law and Government needs to act now.’
Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Ann Marie Carrie, said: ‘The Care
Bill and the Children and Families Bill represent a significant opportunity to
improve the long-term outcomes for young carers. It is vital that the
Government does not miss this chance to reform the law to ensure that young
carers get the help that they need.'
The Children's Society, The Carers Trust and Barnardo's all work with young carers and their families. We've come together to ensure that young carers and their families are high up the political agenda and to make sure they get the support they deserve.
