Six months ago international donors pledged 3.5 billion dollars to rebuild Gaza. In addition to money, they promised to work towards change that would move Palestinians and Israelis beyond conflict and towards a just and durable peace.
Representatives of over 60 countries committed to work with Israel and Palestinian political actors to address the root causes of conflict and strengthen the basis for a lasting ceasefire. These representatives spoke of a paradigm shift that they hoped would end violence, rebuild Gaza, end the Israeli blockade on Gaza, and re-establish economic, social, and political connections between Gaza and the West Bank.
Six months on, the international community has failed to live up to their pledges or to their words.
100,000 Palestinians in Gaza are still homeless and not one of the 19,000 houses destroyed have been rebuilt. Water and electricity are intermittent, schools and hospitals remain in ruins, and over one million people don’t have money to buy enough food to eat.
Donors have made good on just 26.8 percent of the money for reconstruction and have delivered zero towards their paradigm shift. There is no permanent ceasefire agreement, no plan to end the blockade, and Palestinians in Gaza remain sealed off from Palestinians in the West Bank and from the rest of the world.
Without lifting the blockade, we are reconstructing poverty, conflict, and despair. The people of Gaza must have freedom of movement, freedom to trade, freedom from aid dependency and freedom from the fear of death and destruction.
We must change course before it is too late. We are calling on those who pledged to put up their money and show Palestinians in Gaza real progress by delivering meaningful reconstruction and ending the blockade.
This campaign is organized by humanitarian, development, faith, and rights based agencies that share a simple message: Stop reconstructing poverty, conflict, and despair. Lift the blockade and rebuild Gaza. Your support for this Thunderclap campaign will help this message be heard around the world on 13 April 2015.
