#SavePunjabiDeli

For over 20 years, Punjabi Deli, located on Avenue A and 1st street, has been a fixture in the Lower East Side both as a local favorite and a taxi driver destination. Conveniently located and open 247, this spot is a haven for hard working cabbies, serving up fresh tea and homemade vegetarian Indian cuisine, all soundtracked by bhangra or classical Indian music. A warm smile from any of the hardworking employees is guaranteed with every meal.

Since 2010 construction has completely redesigned the street in front of Punjabi Deli, effectively eliminating East 1st street from Avenue A up to the Punjabi Deli in the hopes of creating a park. Construction on this park was supposed to end in 2013 and has still not finished.  This has totally eliminated the abundance of street parking previously available to pedestrians and cabbies alike and in turn has affected the business of the deli - gross revenues have dropped over 50%.

In order to save the deli,  A Taxi Relief Stand is being requested right on East Houston Street in front of Punjabi Deli, and on part of East 1st close to the Deli.  A Taxi Relief Stand is a parking designated specifically for taxi drivers.

Punjabi Deli has sent multiple correspondences to the local Council Member (Rosie Mendez), NYC Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), and local Community Board 3 asking for meetings and requesting a Taxi Relief Stand on E. Houston as well as more information on the park construction. Both parties have refused to meet with Punjabi Deli. They have stated in the media that they will not meet with Punjabi Deli until the Community Board considers the issue.

Currently, NYC DOT has submitted a proposal to the Community Board to place a Taxi Relief Stand around the corner from Punjabi Deli, on Avenue A between E. Houston and E2nd St for four spots.  This proposal is inadequate and made without consulting with Punjabi Deli.

We need your help to tell NYC Dot, the local Council Member and Mayor Bill DeBlasio to build a Taxi Relief Stand in the right place in save this establishment that has been serving its community for over 20 years. These types of establishments are the ones that show the true triumphs of the entrepreneurial dream in NYC and represent the cultural diversity that makes NYC and the LES the unique community that it is.

The Community Board’s Transportation Committee is considering this inadequate proposal on May 12, 2015 at 6:30pm at University Settlement at Houston Street Center - 273 Bowery. If you live in New York, come to the meeting and show your support- we need all we can get!
