Architecture is Culture

The Province of Ontario has launched a province-wide consultation to develop the first Culture Strategy for Ontario. This strategy will set a vision for culture in Ontario, identifying principles and priorities to guide the government’s support to culture for the next five years.

The current discussion paper fails to recognize the contributions of contemporary architecture, and design in general, to Ontario’s culture scene. In fact, the discussion paper doesn’t even mention the word architecture at all! It also fails to recognize the important role architecture plays in creating the spaces for culture, from libraries to concert halls, enabling and influencing so many of our cultural expressions.

We need your support to make architecture and design cultural priorities for Ontario.

We have until December 7 to make sure our voices are heard and let the government know that architecture and design are integral parts of Ontario’s culture.

We invite you to tell the government what architecture means to you and your community. How do you create culture through design? How does architecture contribute to your understanding of Ontario's culture?

Please take a moment to join our campaign - attend a town hall session, share ideas on the Culture Talks website, or use #ONculture on Twitter. Tell the province what architecture and design mean to you!

To show your support, please take a moment to add your name to our Thunderclap. By signing up, you help us reach thousands of followers with a message calling on the province to make architecture and design a priority in Ontario’s new culture strategy.

  • Thank you!

Thank you for participating in our thunderclap!  Our collective voices have helped make Ontario's design and architecture community more visible to the Ontario government!

Architecture is now well represented in Ontario's Culture Talk website. 7 out of the 10 most popular proposals are related to architecture and design! If you would like to see some of the ideas and comments submitted on Ontario's Culture Talks website, please click here.

The OAA also submitted an official response to the discussion paper. You can find a copy of our response here.

Our Local Societies also joined in the call to include architecture and design in Ontario's first Culture Strategy. You can find the submission by the Toronto Society of Architects here and the Hamilton/Burlington Society of Architects here.

Ontario's schools of architecture in also joined our call, encouraging students and faculty to participate in the consultation process. You can read the submission by Laurentian University's School of Architecture here.

The OAA will continue to monitor this issue as the Ministry develops Ontario's first Culture Strategy and we will make sure to share with you any updates along the way.
