In November 2015 George Osborne announced he was cutting the NHS bursary and replacing it with hefty loans. This means healthcare students could pay up to 60k to do their degrees which will be paid back from a capped salary at a 1% rise over the next 4 years. Healthcare students do 2300 hours of clinical placement, during which they directly contribute to patient care. They work nights, weekends, 12.5 hour days. To suggest they should pay to do so is insulting given their hard work and dedication to their professions.
The NHS bursary is not a cost, but an investment in the health and well being of our society. Our campaign has gained incredible momentum, with 5000 people attending the march in London on Saturday 9th of January. Please support our one hour walk out with junior doctors on the 10th of February and help us to defend our bursary.
We are the NHS bursary forum standing against the cuts to bursaries for healthcare students.
