Every year, nearly 8 million babies around the world are
born with a serious birth defect. Half of these birth defects (3-5%) will be detected soon after
birth. The other half
will be diagnosed during the first years of life. In many countries, birth
defects are one of the leading causes of death in infants and young
children. Babies who survive and live with these conditions are at an increased
risk for long-term disabilities.
The goal of the campaign is to
expand birth defects surveillance, prevention, care and research worldwide.
