The seed of inspiration for WASTED came from my very first journalism assignment. As a young reporter in rural Northern Nevada, I provided the only on-the-scene media coverage of the murder trial of Kyle Ray and Colby Becker, eighth graders who were charged as adults for and eventually pleaded guilty to the killing of Kyle's parents and younger sister. Those boys are in their thirties now and still in maximum security prison. They never gave a reason for their crimes. The incredible wasted potential of their lives is something that has stayed with me all these years.
I'm a traditionally published author, and I've been through two agents in my effort to publish this book the traditional way. Publishers rejected it because the protagonist is too young and the story is too dark for young adult, and they aren't sure what to do with an adult book that has a fourteen-year-old protagonist. I'm excited to explore another path to getting WASTED out into the world--and to share the experience with other writers through my blog.
Will you help me stage a story revolution? Nominate WASTED on Kindle Scout. When it publishes (and it will, one way or the other), you'll get a free copy for being part of my tribe.
