Over the last 15 years, there has been a growing field of academic study in Applied Theatre. This term refers to drama and theatre that is presented to specific groups of people in non-theatre buildings with the explicit aim of helping them to make positive changes in their lives. In the UK there are now a significant number of university-based courses that explore the theory and practice of such work, including looking at how theatre can be used in prison. Unfortunately, these courses come up short when looking at how one actually goes about trying to get work in such places. In Closed Spaces aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice. It is being run by the directors of three of the UK's leading arts organisations working with offenders - Geese Theatre, TiPP and Rideout. Between them the facilitators have over 60 years experience of specialist knowledge. This is the first time these three organisations have come together and offer an intensive 5 day course. We would like a Thunderclap to help use spread the word as widely as possible, to make potential participants aware of this unique opportunity.
The three organisations involved in running the course are all registered charities who passionately believe in the essential value of art to help people lead safer and more fulfilling lives.
