The latest official release from CBC (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/missing-ottawa-couple-s-wrecked-van-found-in-new-zealand-1.1857229):

Police in New Zealand are searching for Ottawa residents Joanna Lam and Connor Hayes after a portion of the couple's rental van was found in a gorge in a remote park on the South Island.

Lam, 24, and Hayes, 25, were last seen at Fox Glacier on the afternoon of Sept. 10, according to police.

A friend of Lam, Tamara Sagadore, said Lam and Hayes had been travelling South America and that Lam failed to show up at her new job as a medical imaging specialist for a radiology department in New Zealand on Monday.

The six-month contract had an option for an extended stay, Sagadore said. Lam had worked in the radiology department at The Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus.

Parts of wrecked van found

On Tuesday, police in New Zealand said they had found parts of their rental van.

"A portion of their wrecked rental van was located earlier today [Tuesday] in a gorge off the Haast Pass road at Haast Gates on the west coast of the South Island," police said in a news release.

"The rear wheels and chassis of the vehicle were located about 80 metres down a bluff in the Haast River. The body of the vehicle and engine have not yet been located."

Sagadore said there had been a landslide due to bad weather.

Police don't yet know whether Lam or Hayes was inside the vehicle when it left the road.

Investigators are analyzing the crash site while searchers in boats and on foot will make their way up the Haast River. A helicopter is also involved in the search.

'She was just so excited and optimistic,' friend says

Sagadore said Lam and Hayes have been dating for almost two years. They met and lived together in Ottawa, and she said they're a perfect fit.

Hayes is passionate about running and his family is from the Toronto area. Lam grew up in Kingston, Ont., where her family still lives.

"He's a great guy; I've met him a couple of times," she said.

"I think it's just really difficult because everything's so unknown, especially because it's from such a distance. I spoke with her right before she left and she was just so excited and optimistic, and now this happening. It's almost unfathomable."

Sagadore said she spoke with Lam right before her trip, and Lam was excited and optimistic about what was ahead.
