This year's edition of International Day for Disaster Reduction on 13 October marks the start of the "Sendai Seven Campaign – 7 Targets, 7 Years”. It's an advocacy initiative to encourage implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, with the goal of saving lives, reducing disaster losses and improving management of disaster risk.
The first of the Sendai Framework's seven targets is reducing disaster mortality. This is the bedrock of disaster risk reduction. It's possible to rebuild after a disaster, but a life lost is gone forever, and that can have long-lasting impacts on families and communities.
With that in mind, the slogan for the 2016 edition of International Day for Disaster Reduction is "Live to Tell", with the aim being to create a wave of awareness about actions taken around the world to stop disasters from claiming lives.
