Action to Help End Poverty

17 October is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Join us to help end poverty.

189 world leaders came together at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 and committed themselves - at the highest political level - to a set of eight time-bound targets, known as the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, to help fight extreme poverty worldwide by 2015.

Over the last decade, millions have overcome extreme poverty and attained better access to health care and education but much remains to be done:

  • Extreme poverty is falling in every region of the world, but 870 million people still go hungry.
  • Maternal mortality has been reduced by 47% since 1990.  Ending extreme poverty will improve maternal health worldwide.
  • 89% of the world has access to safe drinking water but still many people lack basic sanitation.
  • Malaria deaths fell by 25% in the last 12 years.

Poverty continues to place barriers on millions seeking an education; job security; and access to essential medicines and medical care, among many other issues. This 17 October, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, provides an opportunity to raise a voice against poverty and to remember that making progress against poverty is possible and achievable.

With just 3 years left, we have an opportunity to build more progress in eradicating extreme poverty!

Join us in our call this 17 October to #EndPoverty."
