Your Protection at Work

Together Union members successfully campaigned for legislative amendments in 2015 to restore rights that were taken away by the Newman government. Now the Parliament is bringing in a new Industrial Relations Act for the first time in over 15 years. This new Bill contains significant improvements for public servants and for the ability of union members to secure better terms and conditions.

However, there is one more very important issue that must be fixed in this Bill: the problem of temporary employment.

More and more public servants are finding themselves on temporary contracts with very little job security. Workers are often on rolling temporary contracts for years.

The biggest barrier that temporary workers face in securing conversion to permanent status is the fact that it's the department that has the final say.

In the private sector, it's ultimately the independent umpire (the Fair Work Commission) that decides whether a person is truly permanent.

Currently, the Public Service Act in Queensland does not allow this for Queensland public servants.

This is what we are trying to change by making submissions to the new Bill.

This is a big week in our campaign to improve job security and permanency for public sector employees. There are two things you can do this week.

Before Together heads into the committee hearings that are happening at Parliament this Wednesday, Alex has to invited you to a teleconference to receive updates on how our campaign is going and how we can win employment security for long-term temporaries, those on higher duties, and contractors.

Check your emails for details of the teleconference. If you haven't received an email, contact alex@together.org.au to dial in.

This will be a quick call during the lunch break. We know not everyone will be able to dial in, but even if you can’t, you can still take part in our Thunderclap on Wednesday!

With over 800 submissions to the committee recommending stronger employment security and cross bencher support for better employment security, our campaign has momentum!
