Every two years, the Olympic flame is lit in Olympia, Greece, where it starts its journey through the country. The final destination is Athens, where the flame is handed over to the nation hosting the Olympic Games.
The 2014 Winter Olympics are being hosted in Sochi, Russia. Recent legislation in Russia has lead to the banning of "homosexual propaganda," criminalising any display of affection between same-sex couples as well as public display of symbols of the LGBTQ community such as the rainbow flag. Additionally, all public demonstrations in Sochi have been banned by President Vladimir Putin for the duration of the Olympics.
The criminalisation of "gay propaganda" has led to increased homophobia and attacks against LGBTQ persons, including the public torture and humiliation of young people who are 'lured' to meetings through personal ads. In one case, a gay teen died following kidnap and torture. This must stop immediately.
Join us at 6pm local time (GMT+2:00) on Saturday, October 5th 2013 when the handover ceremony of the 2014 Olympic flame begins to spread the word that love is not propaganda!
