Issa Amro is a prominent human rights defender in Hebron, Palestine. He is the founder and coordinator of Youth Against Settlements (YAS), an organization that opposes the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements, documents human right violations, and uses nonviolent strategies to support and protect the local community.
As part of the Israel's targeting of human rights activists, on November 23 Issa begins trial in Israeli military court for 18 charges dating back to 2010. The conviction rate in Israeli military court is over 99%.
In 2016 Issa was honored by the Institute for Middle East Understanding. In 2013 he was declared a Human Right Defender by the European Union. In 2010 the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) declared him Palestine's human rights defender of the year. In 2009 Issa won the One World media award for his involvement in the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem’s “Shooting Back” video documentation project.
The charges Issa is facing are indicative of the tremendous legal obstacles placed by Israel in the way of nonviolent Palestinian activists who attempt to exercise their fundamental human rights
