The JUST A CARD campaign aims to encourage people to support Artists/Designers/Makers and Independent Galleries and Shops by stressing that all purchases, however small, even 'Just a Card' are so vital to the prosperity and survival of small businesses.
The campaign came about when Artist & Designer SARAH HAMILTON saw the quote "If everyone who'd complimented our beautiful gallery had bought 'Just a Card' we'd still be open" by store keepers who'd recently closed their gallery. This prompted a call to action!
"As an Artist and Designer who also makes cards, I know how valuable each and every sale is, not only to independent shops and galleries, but to their artist/designer suppliers." Sarah Hamilton
People seldom realise the considerable costs involved in exhibiting
at design shows or keeping a shop open. Stand fees, power,
materials, wages etc need to be met before even a penny of profit can be
realised. Running a shop is often a labour of
love. Without dedication and passion, and crucially
sales, it would be another boarded up eyesore.
One gallery owner, Alison Bartram at HEART GALLERY - a popular and flourishing gallery in Hebden Bridge, blogged -
'I was recently reminded just how IMPORTANT the ‘Just A Card’ campaign is. Three ladies browsed Heart Gallery for about 15/20 minutes. They stated how beautiful the gallery was, how calm and serene, how unique and unusual. Great news; It’s wonderful to hear, of course. They then discussed how much they’d just spent in a High Street chain, and left without buying a card or even a roll of wrapping paper. Now, whilst I so appreciate their kind words, I do hope they’ll make a purchase, however small, next time as compliments don’t pay bills! I’ve just downloaded the A6 postcard from the ‘Just a Card’ website and will display it around the gallery for customers to take away with them to remind them just how much every sale matters to the survival of all small businesses." MAKES magazine, plus a wonderful community, the campaign goes from strength to strength. There's now a small but very hardworking team of volunteers helping spread the message.
