On the day after inauguration, we are providing a safe, warm space for folks coming to the Women’s March on Washington — and other progressive events taking place inauguration weekend — to gain a deeper understanding of the critical challenges facing our nation, find ways to plug into grassroots campaigns that tackle those challenges, connect with people from a vast array of movements and acquire skills to become more effective organizers at home.
The program will consist of an array of panels and workshops about critical grassroots campaigns for the coming year — from campaigns rooted in protecting the rights of women, immigrants, Muslims and people of color to campaigns geared towards demanding democracy, economic justice and a healthy environment.
Since January 21 is also the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United ruling and the Saturday following MLK DAY, the teach-in will launch a serious conversation about what it means to have a democracy in an America where corporate interests rule, votes are suppressed and the constitutional rights of millions are publicly threatened by our elected leaders. Don’t miss the Solidarity Sing-in in the evening!
We’re a broad coalition of organizations representing the labor, peace, environmental, student, racial justice, money in politics reform, immigrant, Muslim and civil rights movements. We share a firm belief that democracy is absent in an America where corporate interests rule and the constitutional rights of millions are publicly threatened by our elected leaders. And we share a deep-rooted commitment to awakening a democracy that represents and protects each and every one of us.
