A #FoodDesert Is Not A Mirage

What is a food desert?

For more than 23 million Americans, a food desert is not a mirage. It’s a daily reality in hundreds of communities that lack access to fresh, affordable, and nutritious food.

The USDA characterizes food deserts as low income, low access neighborhoods that lack grocery stores within a 1 mile proximity for urban residents and 10 miles for rural residents. Many of those in food deserts rely on corner convenience stores that often stock processed snack products (think potato chips, soft drinks, and candy) rather than fresh produce.

Not only do food deserts add to the challenge of food insecurity in America, they create a ripple effect that many policy makers believe contribute to issues like childhood obesity, a higher risk of diabetes and heart diseases, and lost economic and job opportunities for the community.

You might think it unlikely, but chances are you live closer to a food desert than you think.  You can learn more about them and what many organizations are doing to help eliminate the problem by watching these documentaries or visiting this interactive map to find out more about the food deserts nearest your very own neighborhood.

What are we doing?

As a believer in the power of a pound of healthy produce, Naked Juice wants to ensure everyone can have access to good stuff – fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables.  To accomplish this, we have teamed with Wholesome Wave, a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving access and affordability of fresh local produce in undeserved urban and rural communities across America.

With the goal of raising 150,000 pounds worth of fresh fruit and veggies, Naked Juice and Wholesome Wave called on local communities for help.  We pledged to donate one pound worth of fresh produce to Wholesome Wave for every text of DOGOOD to help ensure everyone has access to fresh fruits and veggies.

Through the text to give program, you helped us reach our goal to donate 150,000 pounds worth of produce to Wholesome Wave.  But there’s more you can do to make a difference!

What can you do to help?

Help us spread the word against food deserts by pledging your support to our Thunderclap so we can raise awareness of the problem together!

Thank you for your continued support spreading the word about our fight for fresh access for all!
