Railroad Day 2017 🚂

Railroad Day on Capitol Hill 2017 is almost here. On March 2, hundreds of rail advocates and community leaders will converge on Capitol Hill to talk to members of Congress about the story of freight rail -  stronger economies, more jobs and cleaner skies.

A healthy and vibrant freight rail industry is the backbone of the U.S. economy, supporting vital American jobs and connecting businesses large and small to towns and cities across the U.S., as well as to the global marketplace. Railroads deliver for American businesses and consumers by spending record amounts of private capital needed to sustain and grow the nation’s rail system.

The freight rail industry is an American success story, made possible through smart public policy that ensures railroads are able to sustain private investments in the nation’s critical rail network without burdening taxpayers.

Fast Facts

  • #NationwideNetwork — Railroads operate on a 140,000-mile long network of track they almost exclusively own and maintain themselves.
  • #InvestmentsThatMatter  The nation’s major freight railroads plan to spend an estimated $22.3 billion in 2017 to build, maintain and upgrade America’s rail network to ensure they can continue to deliver for the U.S. economy.
  • #PoweringJobs — Millions of Americans work in industries that are more competitive in the tough global economy thanks to the affordability and productivity of freight railroads. Railroad business activities and buying power support more than 1.5 million jobs across the broader economy.
  • #RailSafety Because of railroads’ massive investment in safety, the train accident rate has fallen by about 45 percent and the rail employee injury rate has fallen 47 percent since 2000.
  • #ShortlineSafety  The congressionally-funded Short Line Safety Institute enhances the safety performance of the short line and regional railroad industry by addressing safety culture. SLSI leads the way in establishing and sharing safety culture best practices, and providing training and education.
  • #Pass45G  Through the 45G tax credit, short line railroads have spent more than $4 billion of their own capital to drive safety and efficiency improvements for customers, serving much of rural and small town America. Pass the BRACE Act to ensure investment continues!

@GoRail

GoRail unites rail stakeholders with community leaders and the public in support of rail solutions to tomorrow’s transportation challenges. GoRail believes that every additional ton of freight moving by rail instead of over our congested highways means more jobs and a stronger economy, less pollution and cleaner skies, and greater fuel efficiency and clearer roads ahead.
