rolling out a disease awareness campaign in schools and sports clubs across the
country, called Tackle Meningitis.
Tackle Meningitis is a GSK initiative, supported by Meningitis Now and the Meningitis Research Foundation. It aims to raise awareness of the disease, its symptoms and the fact that it can affect both children and young people. We're using the power of sport and teamwork to reach as many people as possible.
You may have seen that my two-year old Sami had meningitis last year, so I want as many people as possible to be aware and have the best fighting chance if they are unlucky enough to be affected by this terrible disease.
A recent survey revealed a worrying lack of awareness amongst UK parents, with more than a third wrongly thinking the rash is the first symptom, despite it often appearing later or not at all.
As part of Tackle Meningitis, we are inviting primary and secondary schools and local sports clubs across the UK to participate in the campaign by running an onsite event for parents and children to raise awareness of the disease and its symptoms and strains and where to go for more information and support.
This Thunderclap will end on World Meningitis Day on the 24 April, so I’d really appreciate your help to spread the message and share the campaign with as many people as possible.
I’ve heard that the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (CoMO) are also running a Thunderclap to spread the word in the run up to World Meningitis Day, so please visit their Twitter page and support!
