What is normal?
This World Autism Awareness Month, a group of young activists with autism from across the UK are launching their campaign, Know your Normal to reclaim the word ‘normal’.
The campaign includes an animation film and toolkit which will challenge people to #knowyournormal and raise awareness and understanding of autism.
The myVoice volunteers, supported by Ambitious about Autism, want to remind people that everyone’s ‘normal’ is different and that those quirks that everyone has, is what makes them who they are. And the same applies to people with autism.
Jack Welch, Vice Chair of the charity’s Youth Council and campaigner, said:
“Our experience is that people use the word ‘normal’ to tell us that it is something we’re not. They tell autistic people that not being normal is wrong. We disagree. We should be appreciated for who they are and what we do to make our communities a better place for everyone.
“In fact, over the last year, we have given up more than 900 hours of our time to help and support other children and young people with autism and in that time, we reached over 650 decision makers through our work. I believe that we have proved ourselves to be an effective campaigning force and we want to ensure that they world sees our value.”
Support this amazing campaign by signing up to the thunderclap and sharing the animation with your friends, family and colleagues on social media.
