Stroke Awareness Month 2017

May is National Stroke Awareness Month. Help us raise awareness about stroke as a serious and life-threatening issue. At the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, we want to spread the word that anyone can have a stroke, but there are steps you can take to help prevent a stroke.

Goals to lower your risk of a stroke:

  • Control high blood pressure
  • Quit smoking
  • Lower high cholesterol
  • Eat healthy and keep active
  • Manage your diabetes
  • Take your medications as prescribed
  • Avoid the use of illicit drugs and heavy consumption of alcohol
  • Find out whether daily low-dose aspirin is right for you
For more information about risk factors, go here.

Know these stroke symptoms:

  • Sudden NUMBNESS or weakness of face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden CONFUSION, trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden TROUBLE SEEING in one or both eyes
  • Sudden TROUBLE WALKING, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden SEVERE HEADACHE with no known cause

Stroke strikes fast. You should too. Call 9-1-1.
