Football clubs have a huge impact on climate change and the environment. The travel alone of the 75,000 fans travelling to Old Trafford on match day releases massive amounts of C02. Now multiply this by the thousands of other fans travelling to games, plus the other factors which harm the environment.
Researchers at Cardiff University have found that despite the huge impacts football has on the environment, no legal framework exists requiring clubs to include environmental projects in the everyday running of the club, while teams themselves are very secretive about the limited projects they are undertaking.
We want to change this , and promote fans to lobby their clubs to a.) release information about the environmental projects they are undertaking and b.) promote them to implement more in the future. Our end goal is to present the FA, UEFA and FIFA with enough fan support to make them take the matter seriously, and generate an environmental framework for clubs to follow in the future.
While some teams offer really good schemes (such as discounted public transport to games or only using local produce on match days), many do not. Clubs do not listen to one researcher, they may listen to their fans.
Green Your Team
We are a social movement looking to reduce the environmental impacts of football clubs in the UK. We hope to gain support to lobby organisations such as the FA and FIFA to help generate an environmental framework which all clubs can follow in the future.
