World Bedwetting Day 2017

"The advice I would give is don’t ignore it, because if you ignore it, the problem will never go away. You should never be embarrassed to talk to somebody about it, because there’s always somebody else that’s got the same problem as you and if you don’t talk to anybody then nothing will ever change." Edward, 13

Bedwetting is a common childhood condition that can and should be treated. Left untreated, it won't necessarily go away by itself. Affecting about 16% of five year old's and 1% of teenagers, bedwetting can have a serious impact on a child's life, but is often misunderstood and not talked about.

World Bedwetting Day on Tuesday 30th May aims to spread the message that bedwetting is nobody's fault, it's a common medical problem that can and should be treated from the age of 5 years.

Why do parents delay seeking treatment by up to 3 years?
Parents delay seeking help from a health care professional because:

  • They think their child is being lazy or it's their fault in some way
  • They're too embarrassed to admit their child has a problem
  • They've been told that their child will grow out of it so they decide to 'watch and wait.'
What impact can bedwetting have on young people?
Bedwetting can have a serious impact on a child’s day to day life affecting
  • Self-esteem
  • Emotional well-being
  • Achievement at school
  • Social life.
Impact of bedwetting on the family:
  • Financial burden due to frequent washing of bedclothes and buying multiple sets of bedding and pyjamas
  • Disagreement between family members of how to deal with the problem
  • Stress caused by worry that child will be 'found out' by peers and bullied
Thank you for adding your voice to the Thunderclap and raising awareness of why bedwetting happens and how it can be treated.
