On November 10, 2016, more than 300 ECE teachers;
education professors; superintendents; principals; and advocates for the whole child sent a letter to NYS Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, the Board of Regents, and Governor Andrew Cuomo asking for a moratorium of the PreK-2 ELA Common Core standards.
Childhood cannot be standardized, we said. Many PreK-2nd grade teachers signed on. But the voices of the real experts--classroom teachers who work in the early grades--were not heard, and the standards remain developmentally inappropriate. We are holding policymakers accountable for their actions, which threaten to squash the joy of learning right from the start.
