by Grant Lichtman category: Education
Hi. My name is Grant Lichtman and for 40 years I have passionately believed that great learning transforms lives. In my new book, Moving the Rock, I throw down a big, audacious challenge for all of us who share that belief. The challenge is simple: schools have to stop preparing students for the past and start preparing students for the future, and WE, teachers, parents, students, and our community stakeholders can make that change happen. It turns out that we don’t need permission from the entrenched interest groups that have combined to keep education stuck in the past for decades. Together, we can just do it.
To be honest, my head kind of explodes every time I hear a teacher or parent or school administrator say “I guess we really need to change schools because they are stuck in the past.” That train left the station a long time ago! We know why schools need to change, and in fact we pretty much know what those changes look like. The big challenge we have to tackle is how to change our schools before we lose another generation of students to a system of learning that just does not serve their needs.
I have reached out to dozens of educators and thought leaders, teachers, students, college professors, and more, and what I found is that there are seven big levers that will transform education if we just press on them really hard, and all of these levers are totally within our control. This is not a pipe dream. Schools of all kinds—public, private, and charter—all over the country, and around the world, serving wealthy and poor communities alike, are already leading the way. We don’t have to invent new levers to move this big rock that is our stuck school system. We just have to find the courage and commitment to press on the levers that are already working powerfully in schools and communities...just like yours.
So I am asking you to help us get past pointing fingers of blame for why our schools are not working as well as they should. I put everything I could find that is really working into this book, Moving the Rock. And since this is about all of us working together, if you buy a copy of the book before October 2017, you can donate my book royalty to an educational non-profit.

Share this video with colleagues, friends, and parents in your school community. No more excuses, no more blaming others. Together, WE can transform schools, right now, and prepare our kids for the profound challenges that face them today and in the future.
